Powr-Grip Camera Mount
August 2, 2007 on 10:46 pm | In Recent Posts |During MTTS we had borrowed a camera mount which came quite handy in taking video whilst on the track or whilst driving along. As I am getting ready to head out to MITM next week I figured it was time to invest in one. Did some searching and purchased the following components
1. Bogen 3025 3D Junior Head from Adorama $30
2. A Wood’s Powr-Grip LJ45AMP 4.5″ Vacuum Cup with threaded stud from MyToolsStore.com $36
3. A conversion Bushing to convert the Powr-Grip 1/4-20 (U.S.) thread to Bogen 3/8-16 (European) thread. $2
The 4.5″ Cup fits nice over the center speedo and here is a sample pictures.
Another option would be to mount it to the drivers window but being a right I find operating it uncomfortable and always have to worry about accidentally opening the window with the suction cup in place which I imagine would really suck. Here’s a sample picture from the drivers window.
I find placing it on the speedo the best and most convenient for me as I can reach over and take shots while driving with ease. I use the digital speedometer integrated into the tach so knowing my speed isn’t an issue and the temp, fuel, battery and oil indicators are still visible though the only light of concern that is covered up is the run-flat light. I think perhaps the 3″ version might be better suited for the MINI and might try that one.
Though after seeing this cool video taken from a helicopter in Iraq using the Powr-Grip Cleat it might be a good alternative and single purchase solution.

I’d be worried if I mounted my Nikon on the speedo, that the weight might rip the speedo apart!

that is indeed a valid concern with a bulkier/heavier camera. I think the weight of the cup/head and 7oz Canon SD700 is a little bit more then 2 lbs and I tried a couple of sharp turns, stops and accelerations and did not see any flex of the speedo glass like I did with the one I borrowed last year which weighed a great deal more.

The weight could be a concern for larger videocams as George said. The 4.5″ cup has a fairly flat face which when completely attached should give good support to the glass. I would hesitate using a 6″ concave pad in this application because it could put too much pressure on it. Wood’s Powr-Grip does make flatter 6″ pads that would work, but it would be a special assembly. Always make sure that the glass and cup is clean when attaching.
